Grand Father Chair

Grand Father Chair

The Grand Father Chair is constructed using solid mahogany timber, a dense hardwood known for its deep reddish-brown hue, straight grain pattern, and high resistance to warping. Mahogany accepts stains and hand-rubbed finishes effectively, resulting in a durable surface that darkens naturally over years of exposure to light. The framing employs traditional joinery techniques, utilizing mortise and tenon joints secured with wooden dowels rather than visible metal fasteners, which distributes structural load evenly across the chair’s support members.

The overarching design follows the Chippendale style idiom, characterized by restrained ornamentation, cabriole front legs, and scroll-carved structural elements. The backrest is high and slightly reclined, measuring 110.00 cm from the floor to the top of the crest rail, designed to support the user’s upper back and head. The wooden crest rail features a carved serpentine contour with subtle ears curving outward, reflecting 18th-century English cabinet-making proportions. The backrest panel is padded and upholstered, framed by exposed mahogany margins that display the manual chisel work of the artisan.

The seating area has a width of 78.00 cm and a depth of 55.00 cm, forming a wide proportional footprint suitable for upright sitting or relaxed posture. The seat cushion rests on a supportive webbing and spring platform, enclosed by a shaped mahogany seat rail. The armrests curve outward from the side stiles, supported by recessed, curved pillars that integrate directly into the seat framing. The terminals of the armrests feature carved handholds with a downward scroll detail.

Supporting the entire structure are four legs. The front two legs are styled in the characteristic Chippendale cabriole shape, curving outward at the knee and tapering down to claw-and-ball feet, which are hand-carved directly from the solid mahogany stock. The rear legs are raked backward to counterbalance the weight distribution and prevent tipping when a user leans against the high backrest. The entire wooden frame has a finished volume of 0.4700 cubic meters (CBM) and a physical weight of 18.00 kg, making it substantial enough to remain stationary on carpeted or hardwood floors without sliding during use.

Upholstery covers the interior backrest and the top surface of the seat base. The fabric is fixed to the frame using a continuous row of brass upholstery tacks driven individually into the wood rebate along the perimeter. The density of the internal foam padding maintains its shape under sustained vertical pressure, resisting compression flattening over extended periods. The mahogany components are sealed with multiple coats of clear lacquer, which preserves the natural color variation of the wood grain while providing a barrier against moisture and surface scratches. Routine maintenance requires only a dry cloth for dust removal and occasional application of furniture wax to maintain the satin sheen of the mahogany finish.
